Overview & Curriculum
This project is an opportunity for teens to learn beginner and intermediate woodworking techniques. Particiants will have design autonomy over the table they make, and tool use will start with safety training. Throughout the course of the week students will learn more advanced techniques, and use both hand and power tools to build a unique table with geometric top design.
After the project each student will have the opportunity to share their work with the community by displaying their table at the Lynchburg Art Club.
Schedule
This project is from 9:00am - 3:00pm starting Monday, June 13 and ending Friday, June 17. Students should dress in clothes that can get messy, with closed-toe shoes and no loose or baggy hair or clothing.
Eligibility
This project is for students ages 14 to 19 (rising 9th through 12th grades). The early registration fee is $250 until May 9, and $275 afterwards.
Scholarships are available by application on the Scholarships tab. The application period closes May and applicants will be notified by June 1.
Instructors
Des Black
Des is a retired engineer who has worked with wood most of this life and now creates one of a kind wooden bowls, boxes, coffee tables and other wooden items he is asked to make. He offers wood turning classes at Vector Space, is a member of the Central VA woodworkers guild, a member of the Virginia Artisans Trail and owns the Forest Splinters Threads business with his wife. His work can be seen at Goose Creek Studios in Bedford VA.
Elise Spontarelli
Elise loves vectors. She's made an entrepreneurial career rendering lines, arcs, and polygons, and since cofounding Vector Space, the addiction has only gotten worse. You'll often find Elise giving her designs life by vinyl cutting, laser engraving, and silk screening. When she's not enthralled by graphics, you'll find her in the wood shop making toys and home decor.
Elise is also a strong advocate of the maker movement, and Vector Space's fearless leader.
