Paint a public mural in Downtown Lynchburg this summer.

Overview & Curriculum

High school students will help design and paint a large scale work of public art in Downtown Lynchburg. This project will incorporate thoughtful discussion of contemporary and historical public art works, hands-on preparation, and installation of a work of public art.

Teens will be given the chance to submit their ideas for the design of the mural before the project begins! On the first day of class we will reveal the design, have a discussion about the history and logistics of public art and get to work transfering the design to the mural spot. By Friday, a new piece of public art will be revealed in Downtown Lynchburg.

Schedule

This project is from 9:00am - 3:00pm starting Monday, June 20 and ending Friday, June 24. Much of the time will be spent outside, so students should dress accordingly for warm weather and bring water bottles and a packed lunch.

Eligibility

This project is for students ages 14 to 19 (rising 9th through 12th grades). The early registration fee is $225 until May 16, and $250 afterwards.

Scholarships are available by application on the Scholarships tab. The application period closes May 16 and applicants will be notified by June 6.

Instructors

Christina Davis

Christina's passion for expressing her identity led her to become an self taught artist and teacher. When she isn't teaching art, drinking coffee, or chasing her toddler, she loves to create pieces that reflect her voice, color, and individualism.

Christina's work captures the most fleeting moments, and the way she looks at the world. Her process involves starting with a focus a face or emotion, then improvising during the process, and dark contour lines.

In her community, she has created large public art pieces like murals, she teaches art camps, and contributes time/fundraising for groups of younger artists. Art is versatile.

Nugent Koscielny

Nugent Kosciely is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose body of work reflects a deep interest in our environment and psychology. She is a recent graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art, receiving her MFA in Studio Art in 2020. She received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from VCU in Richmond, Virginia and studied Drawing at the Beaux Arts de Paris. She received her MEd from the University of Lynchburg where she studied Counseling. She has exhibited work in the Carrousel du Louvre and La Chapelle de la Salpetriere in Paris, France as well as galleries and alternative spaces in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Applications for this project are open through June 18, 2022.

We are happy to offer needs-based scholarships for families that cannot afford the class registration fee. This scholarship is not merit-based, but reserved only for those in need of financial assistance. Scholarships will cover the entire registration cost of the program, and are made possible by the generosity of Vector Space supporters. In order to qualify, your household income must fall within the Very Low or Extremely Low income brackets as defined by the department of Housing and Urban Development.

Announcement of scholarship awards is made after registration closes.
