Description
This introductory class on the CNC router focuses on the workflow for routing a 2D design programmed in SheetCAM. Taking a pre drawn vector graphic image, the students will create a G-code program using SheetCam software. Each student will go through the steps of setting up the tooling and workpiece, loading the program and cutting the parts on the CNC router. Each student will create a wooden tray cut out with the CNC router.
In the process we’ll cover,
- Use SheetCAM to generate a toolpath
- Importing vectorized drawings
- Contours and layers
- Nesting and Tabs
- Tool creation and discussion of tool choice
- Feed and Speed (use FSWizard app)
- Cut simulation
- Exporting gcode
- Reviewing gcode as a text file
- LinuxCNC
- Importing gcode
- Homing the machine
- Workpiece Clamping
- Vacuum table
- Screws
- Clamps
- Chip extraction
- Starting/Pausing/E-stopping operation

Instructors
Ken Pritchett
Making has always been what Ken does. He started by taking things apart when he was very young and progressed through jobs as a small engine mechanic, cabinetmaker/millman and civil engineer. As a child he would make boats and other wood projects in his grandfather’s workshop, tackling a larger project each summer. One year it was a hang glider (before they were a thing). Later he moved on to remodeling and house expansion projects: concrete, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall and roofing.
His interests at Vector Space include woodworking, machining, blacksmithing, 3D printing and combat robots. He has a junior college teaching credential in woodworking and many years’ experience in CNC router programming and operation. Ken has been blacksmithing off and on for that last 10 years. He loves to teach and looks forward to working with each new group of students!
