Learn the basics of wood working, and build your own canoe.

Overview & Curriculum

This project is an opportunity for teens to learn beginner and intermediate woodworking techniques. Particiants will begin by learning to read and interpret detailed plans, basic boat building techniques, and tool safety training. Throughout the course of the week, students will learn more advanced techniques and use both hand and power tools to build their own canoe, then finish it off with a custom paint job.

On the final day of the project, students will set sail in Clemmons Lake at Ivy Creek Park.

Eligibility

This project is for students ages 14 to 19 (rising 9th through 12th grades). The registration fee is $300. Students will keep their canoe at the end of the project.

Instructors

Des Black

Des is a retired engineer who has worked with wood most of this life and now creates one of a kind wooden bowls, boxes, coffee tables and other wooden items he is asked to make. He offers wood turning classes at Vector Space, is a member of the Central VA woodworkers guild, a member of the Virginia Artisans Trail and owns the Forest Splinters Threads business with his wife. His work can be seen at Goose Creek Studios in Bedford VA.

Application

Applications for this project are open through June 4, 2023.

All applications are anonymized before review by a selection committee. Applicants are chosen based upon maker experience, talent, and their passion for the content of this program.

All applicants will be notified of their selection status 3 weeks prior to the project start date. If accepted, payment must be made within one week of being notified.

We are happy to offer needs-based scholarships for families that cannot afford the class registration fee. This scholarship is not merit-based, but reserved only for those in need of financial assistance. Your request for financial assistance will not be shared with the selection committee and therefore will not affect the decisions made regarding your application. Scholarships will cover the entire registration cost of the program, and are made possible by the generosity of Vector Space supporters. In order to qualify, your household income must fall within the Very Low or Extremely Low income brackets as defined by the department of Housing and Urban Development.
