POLICY REGARDING FIREARMS

Given that:

• In the Code of Virginia as referenced in § 18.2-308.1 firearms are prohibited on property being used exclusively for a school-sponsored function or extracurricular activity (https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title18.2/chapter7/section18.2-308.1/), and
• It is the right of any business in Virginia to prohibit carry of firearm (https://www.oag.state.va.us/files/Opinions/2012/11-111_Newman.pdf), and
• The intent of the law is for firearms not to be present on a property when school programs are taking place, and
• The schedule of school programs is unpredictable and multiple educational partners are involved, and
• Use or possession of a firearm is not related to our nonprofit’s educational mission to build an open and collaborative community that fosters innovation, creativity, and the pursuit of science based knowledge;

Vector Space therefore prohibits the possession of firearms on the property at all times. Vector Space property includes all of the building structures, parking lots, and outdoor space at 2000, 2004, and 2020 Memorial Avenue, and 2804 and 2810 Langhorne Road.

This policy was adopted by the Board of Directors November 1, 2023.
