GENERAL
A vinyl cutter is used to cut adhesive-backed vinyl for stickers, sign making, and screen printing. It can also cut heat press vinyl for use in printing on shirts, hats, mugs, etc.

We have a 28&quot; USCutter MH721 and a Roland SV-8 vinyl cutter.

Inkcut is the software used to control the vinyl cutter. InkCut is a Python-based application that controls 2D plotters, vinyl cutters, and CNC machines. It lets you prepare graphics, scale, add weed lines, and send designs directly to your cutter. It is installed on the computer at the vinyl cutting station at Vector Space, in Printmaking.

Inkcut is an extension of the vector graphics program Inkscape. The general workflow is to design something in Inkscape, save it as an .svg, then open that .svg with Inkcut where it's sent to the cutter.

There are a few adjustment settings available in Inkcut; most of your design modification and prep work will need to be done with Inkscape.

As seen in the screenshot here, within Inkcut you can resize, rotate, and mirror your design.

By clicking on the Material tab (top left tab, pictured), you can adjust your material size, margin, and alignment settings.

By clicking on the Weedlines tab (middle left tab), you can add weedlines (a border cut around your graphic) to your job.

By clicking on the Layers tab (bottom left tab), you can select different layers from your .svg file to display and cut.

SAFETY
Operation of this device requires use of sharp blades.

Vinyl cutters are subject to static build-up.

PROCEDURE
This procedure is written assuming the use of the MH721 vinyl cutter. The SV-8 works very similarly, and any differences can be found in the manufacturer's manual.

1. Prepare design
# Use Inkscape or another vector graphics software to prepare your design and export it as an .svg file. Note that text will need to be converted to a path in Inkscape.
# Choose a piece of vinyl that will fit your design. It is recommended that you choose a piece that will allow for at least one inch of margin in the y axis and two inches of margin in the x axis.

2. Load vinyl
# Lift the three roller levers on the back of the vinyl cutter to open up the clamps.
# Load your sheet of vinyl into the cutter so that the closest edge lies between the blade carriage the ruler located on the front of the machine.
#* For sticker vinyl, place the vinyl facing up so that the backing (usually white) is face down.
#* For heat press vinyl, flip the vinyl so that the matte (non glossy) side is facing up.
# Set the clamp levers to the middle position, locking the vinyl sheet in place.
#* At least two of the roller clamps will need to be clamped onto your vinyl for successful cutting.
#* Avoid positioning a roller clamp in the gap between the two feed rollers (at the center of the machine).
# Slide the blade carriage to sit in the bottom corner of your vinyl (0,0 position: see x and y planes labeled on machine).

3. Prepare machine
#Review the cutter settings on the display screen. The default settings are:
#*Cut speed: 300mm/s
#* Cut press: 100g
#Check cutting blade.
#*Loosen the screw on the blade carriage and remove the blade holder.
#*Clear any vinyl scraps or debris from the blade area.
#*Check that the blade is sharp and that it is positioned to barely protrude from the blade housing.
#*Return the blade to the housing and tighten screw to hold it securely in place.
#Perform a test cut on a scrap piece of your vinyl by pushing the "Test" button on the machine. This will cut a small star that will allow you to determine whether your speed and pressure settings are correct.

4. Open file
# Open Inkcut (Applications > Graphics).
# Click File &gt; Open and select the .svg file that you would like to cut.
# Note the x and y axis labeled on the machine and cross check this with the x and y axis on your screen. Ensure your vinyl is loaded in the correct orientation.
# Once the svg image is displayed in the preview window, you can make minor adjustments to your piece.

5. Cut graphic
# Start the cutting operation by clicking the Device menu option, then Send to device. Alternately, you can click CTRL +P to bring up the same dialog window.
# Review the dialog window for accuracy, then click Start.

Key cutting notes:

1. When choosing a starting location, remember that the process will start in the bottom left area of the design.

2. Leave enough room to the left of and behind the starting location to finish the cut.

4. If setting up for your first cut with the machine the default values are good starting points.

5. Upon making any adjustments to the cutter, make sure to return to the main screen before cutting.

TUTORIAL
My First Vinyl Cut
After reviewing the above procedure, the following steps are recommended for your first test use of the vinyl cutter.

#Download circle.svg by right clicking the link and selecting Save Link As.
# Open Inkcut (Applications > Graphics).
# Click File in the menu, then Open. Navigate to your downloaded file and click Open.
# Load Vinyl.
## Choose a piece of vinyl that is at least 3" in both directions.
## Lift the three roller levers on the back of the vinyl cutter to open up the clamps.
## Load your sheet of vinyl into the cutter so that it slightly overhangs the ruler located on the front of the machine.
##* For sticker vinyl, place the vinyl facing up so that the [usually white] backing is face down.
##* For heat press vinyl, flip the vinyl so that the matte (non glossy) side is facing up.
## Set the clamp levers to the middle position, locking the vinyl sheet in place.
##* At least two of the roller clamps will need to be clamped onto your vinyl for successful cutting.
##* Avoid positioning a roller clamp in the gap between the two feed rollers (at the center of the machine).
# Prepare Machine.
## Review the cutter settings on the display screen. The default settings are:
##*Cut speed: 300mm/s
##* Cut press: 100g
##Check cutting blade.
##*Loosen the screw on the blade carriage and remove the blade holder.
##*Clear any vinyl scraps or debris from the blade area.
##*Check that the blade is sharp and that it is positioned to barely protrude from the blade housing.
##Perform a test cut on a scrap piece of your vinyl by pushing the "Test" button on the machine. This will cut a small star that will allow you to determine whether your speed and pressure settings are correct.
# Cut Graphic.
## Start the cutting operation by clicking the Device menu option, then Send to device. Alternately, you can click CTRL +P to bring up the same dialog window.
## Review the dialog window for accuracy, then click Start.
# Review your cut for any issues. Check that the size is correct and that the sticker comes off of the sheet cleanly and in one piece.

My Second Vinyl Cut
The following steps will cover mirroring your design, weeding, and transferring your sticker. This procedure picks up immediately after My First Vinyl Cut, and assumes your software and machine settings have already been adjusted.

#Download text.svg by right clicking the link and selecting Save Link As.
# Click File in the menu, then Open. Navigate to your downloaded file and click Open.
# Load Vinyl (choose a piece that is at least 4" in the x direction and 2" in the y direction).
# Adjust design.
## In the Inkcut Graphic window (right side), select the checkbox next to "Mirror about y-axis" to mirror your design. The word TEXT should now read properly left to right.
## Click the Weedlines tab (middle left tab) to display a new window of options.
## Select the checkbox next to "Add weedline to plot".
## Click the Weedlines tab again to hide the dialog box. Confirm that a new rectangle has appeared around the word TEXT.
# Cut Graphic.
## Start the cutting operation by clicking the Device menu option, then Send to device. Alternately, you can click CTRL +P to bring up the same dialog window.
## Review the dialog window for accuracy, then click Start.
# Weed sticker.
## Remove your vinyl from the machine and cut around the weed box with scissors.
## Using an Exacto knife or other pointed device, remove all vinyl around the word TEXT.
## Cut a piece of transfer paper (clear tape with blue grid lines) that is slightly larger than your TEXT.
## Smoothly place the transfer tape over your design, rubbing hard to ensure adhesion.
## Lift the transfer tape slowly, helping the vinyl to stick to it as you lift it from the backing paper.
## Your TEXT sticker is now ready to be placed onto its final destination. Stick the vinyl with transfer paper to a smooth, solid surface, and rub with pressure to ensure adhesion. Next carefully peel away the transfer paper, leaving the TEXT vinyl behind.

TROUBLESHOOTING
+
Issue
Solution
Partial cuts or skipped areas
The blade may dull, or the cutting pressure may be too light. Replace the blade and if necessary (for thicker vinyl especially) increase the cut pressure.
Communication Error
If you're hitting Start and nothing's happening (especially if you recently had to stop the machine mid-cut), the machine's RAM may be full. Toggle the power button off and then back on to reset the memory, and then resume your work.
Wavy Lines wavy lines and inconsistent cuts
Make sure that the two white wheels behind the carriage arm are both resting securly on top of (not in front of) the track. If the wheels are not on the track, gently lift the carriage arm and press back until the wheels engage securely on the track. If not, see http://Www.USCutter.com/static/PDFs/carriage_off_track.pdf
Unexpected slashes are made across the vinyl
If the blade is protruding too far from the blade carriage, then it can score and cut during travel. If this occurs, adjust the blade so that it is protruding a minimal distance from the carriage.
Vinyl slips and design is cut incorrectly
Ensure that at least two roller clamps are making contact with the vinyl at all times. If the vinyl slips out of a clamp it will only move on one side, causing a shift in the design.
Words in text not cutting completely
Solution unknown. This may be a software issue, and has not yet been solved. Suggestions include increasing the size of the text, and decreasing the speed of the cutter.
PROCEDURE
This procedure is written assuming the use of the MH721 vinyl cutter. The SV-8 works very similarly, and any differences can be found in the manufacturer's manual.

1. Prepare design
# Use Inkscape or another vector graphics software to prepare your design and export it as an .svg file. Note that text will need to be converted to a path (Inkscape) or outline (Illustrator).

# Click File in the menu, then Open.
# Navigate to /vsfs01/share/vinyl_cutter/text.svg and click Open.
# Load Vinyl.

Disconnect power during assembly, service and maintenance.

Note that text will need to be converted to a path (Inkscape) or outline (Illustrator).

# Load your sheet of vinyl into the cutter so that it slightly overhangs the ruler located on the front of the machine.
#* For sticker vinyl, place the vinyl facing up so that the [usually white] backing is face down.

1. When choosing a starting location, remember that the process will start in the bottom right area of the design.

2. Leave enough room to the left of and behind the starting location to finish the cut.

4. If setting up for your first cut with the machine the default values are good starting points.

5. Upon making any adjustments to the cutter, make sure to return to the main screen before cutting.

Disconnect power during assembly, service and maintenance.

Note that text will need to be converted to a path (Inkscape) or outline (Illustrator).

# Load your sheet of vinyl into the cutter so that it slightly overhangs the ruler located on the front of the machine.
#* For sticker vinyl, place the vinyl facing up so that the [usually white] backing is face down.

TUTORIAL
My First Vinyl Cut
After reviewing the above procedure, the following steps are recommended for your first test use of the vinyl cutter.

# Open Inkcut (Applications > Graphics).
# Click File in the menu, then Open.
# Navigate to /vsfs01/share/vinyl_cutter/circle.svg and click Open.
# Load Vinyl.

# Click File in the menu, then Open.
# Navigate to /vsfs01/share/vinyl_cutter/text.svg and click Open.
# Load Vinyl.

Preparing For Cutting:
1. Place the roll on top of the stand rollers.
a. For heat press vinyl, please flip the roll.
b. If cutting from a scrap or single sheet instead of a roll, skip this step on placing a vinyl roll. All other steps will be the same.
2. Release the pinch rollers release levers.
3. Feed the vinyl underneath the pinch rollers.
a. Working from a single sheet instead of a roll, the vinyl can also be feed from the front.
4. Adjust the pinch rollers so there is one roller located on each side of the vinyl (and, on models with 3 or more rollers, one roller near the center). Avoid lowering a pinch roller to the gap between the two feed rollers.
5. Leave a gap of between 1/2”-1 1/2” from the edge of the roller and the edge of the vinyl on both sides.
6. Engage the Pinch Rollers by pushing down on the Pinch Roller Release Levers.

Changing the position of where the cut will be made:
1. Press the OFFLINE/PAUSE button to enter offline mode.
2. Adjust the vinyl to where the cut is to start by using the Up and Down arrow keys on the control panel.
3. Adjust the blade to where you want your cut to start by using the Left and Right arrow keys.
4. Press the Origin button to tell the cutter that this is the 4 location where you would like the cut to begin.

Key cutting notes:
1. When choosing a starting location, remember that the process will start in the bottom right area of the design.
2. Leave enough room to the left of and behind the starting location to finish the cut.
3. Now is the time to make other adjustments to the pressure, speed, or other settings.
4. If setting up for your first cut with the machine the default values are good starting points.
5. Upon making any adjustments to the cutter, make sure to return to the main screen before cutting.

TROUBLESHOOTING
* Communication Error: If you're hitting SEND and nothing's happening, TuxPlot may be sending to the wrong port (/dev/null). Click &quot;Profile&quot; in the left column and check that the option "plot to CUPS printer" is selected.
* Wavy Lines wavy lines and not cutting through all of design: check that the white wheels are on the track. If not, see http://Www.USCutter.com/static/PDFs/carriage_off_track.pdf
* Default Parameters Suggested parameters for vinyl are cut speed of 200mm/s and cut press of 200g.
* Cut Already in Progress: If you shut off the vinyl cutter in the middle of a cut, everyone gets confused. When you try to start a new cut, TuxPlot may give an error saying that it's already cutting. Close TuxPlot and run the script on the desktop named cleanTuxPlot.sh. Then rerun TuxPlot.

A common mistake is having a black circle, filled with black. Tthe vinyl cutter will proceed to obliterate the entirety of the circle. To avoid, turn off the color fill, and turn on the stroke outline so that the design is just the outline for the path the knife to follow.
* Use chemicals only in designated areas
* Keep containers closed when not in use
* Avoid contaminating shared supplies
* Clean spills immediately
* Wash hands after handling chemicals

Do not dispose of chemicals in sinks unless approved.

MATERIAL USE
The stained glass studio operates using a combination of shared supplies, member-provided materials, and community donations.

Members are expected to use materials responsibly and support the sustainability of the studio.

Consumable Materials
Consumables are materials intended to be used during normal studio work and replaced regularly.

Examples include:

* Flux
* Patina
* Cutting oil
* Cleaning supplies
* Shop paper towels
* Polishing Wax

These materials are provided for general studio use.

Members should:

* Use consumables reasonably
* Avoid waste
* Close containers after use
* Notify a steward when supplies run low

Non-Consumable Materials (Member-Provided)
Non-consumable project materials must be provided by individual members.

These include:

* Copper foil tape
* Solder
* Glass
* Personal specialty supplies

Members are expected to bring and maintain their own materials for ongoing projects.

Do not assume these materials are communal unless explicitly labeled as shared.

Glass Use Policy (Mixed Material)
Glass is considered a shared but limited resource.

Vector Space glass primarily comes from donations and is intended to support learning, experimentation, and small projects.

Shared Glass May Be Used For:
* Practice pieces
* Small projects
* Skill development
* Occasional project needs

Members Planning Large Projects
If you are completing a large project or using significant quantities of a single glass color, please:

* Bring your own glass whenever possible
* Use shared glass sparingly
* Avoid depleting commonly used colors

Supporting the Studio
If you notice you are using a large amount of a specific glass type or color, consider contributing back by:

* Donating glass sheets
* Replacing frequently used colors
* Contributing surplus materials

Glass may be purchased:

* Online from stained glass suppliers
* At local craft stores

Community contributions help keep the studio accessible for all members.

Shared Studio Tools
Shared tools are equipment used to fabricate stained glass projects and remain permanently in the studio.

These tools are not personal property and must not leave the space.

Examples include:

* Glass grinders
* Soldering irons and stands
* Glass cutters and specialty cutters
* Beetle bit tools
* Studio hand tools
* Work surfaces and assembly areas

Shared Tool Expectations
Members must:

* Return tools to their designated locations
* Clean tools after use
* Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment
* Never modify tools without approval
* Never remove tools from the studio

Shared tools exist for community use and must remain available to all members.

TOOL CARE EXPECTATIONS
Soldering Irons
* Use appropriate soldering temperature around 410 degrees or lower to avoid burning your glass
* Clean tips regularly during use by wiping on a wet sponge and brass wool tip cleaner
* Tin tips before shutting down
* Never leave powered irons unattended
* Return irons to stands when not in use

Proper maintenance extends tool life for all members.

Glass Grinders
After each use:

* Remove glass debris
* Rinse grinder surface
* Maintain proper water level
* Wipe surrounding workspace

Grinding residue must not be allowed to accumulate.

Glass Cutting Tools
* Use cutting oil correctly
* Do NOT put oil in cutters
* Avoid creating oil spills
* Clean tools after use

Improper oil use creates safety hazards and workspace contamination.

Specialty Tools
Includes:

* Beetle bit tools
* Band saw glass cutters

Use only after instruction or orientation approval.

CLEANING & STUDIO MAINTENANCE
Every user is responsible for studio cleanup.

Before leaving:

* Wipe work surfaces
* Return tools to storage
* Sweep glass fragments
* Dispose of scrap properly
* Clean soldering area
* Empty personal materials

The workspace should be ready for the next member immediately.

GLASS HANDLING & DISPOSAL
Proper glass organization keeps materials usable, reduces waste, and maintains a safe studio environment.

Members are responsible for sorting glass correctly after cutting.

Glass Storage Categories
The studio maintains designated storage areas based on glass size.

Large Glass Panes
For:

* Full sheets
* Large remnants suitable for future projects

Store vertically in the designated large glass rack.

Medium Glass Panes
For:

* Clearly usable project pieces
* Pattern-sized remnants

Place in the medium glass storage area.

Small Glass Pieces (Scrap for Future Use)
Small pieces are valuable for:

* detail work
* small pattern elements
* mosaics
* test cuts

Glass approximately 1–2 inches or larger should be saved and placed in the small glass containers.

Before discarding glass, consider whether another member could reasonably use the piece.

Glass Waste Disposal
Only unusable glass belongs in the glass waste buckets.

Dispose of glass when it is:

* Smaller than approximately 1 inch
* Extremely irregular or unsafe to handle
* Cracked or unsuitable for future work

Never place usable glass into waste containers.

Safety Requirements
* Do not overload scrap containers
* Sweep cutting areas after use
* Keep floors free of glass fragments

Safe sorting protects both materials and community members.

Studio Guiding Principle
When in doubt, save usable glass — but organize it properly.

PROJECT STORAGE
The stained glass studio provides limited shared storage for active projects and materials.

Proper labeling and organization are required to maintain safe and usable workspace.

Approved Project Storage
Projects and materials may be stored on the designated project shelves.

These shelves include large 2×2' slab surfaces intended for active stained glass work.

Requirements:

* Label all projects with name and date
* Keep materials consolidated and organized
* Store only active projects currently in progress

Storage Restrictions
* No storage underneath work tables
* Work tables must remain clear for shared use and safe movement
* Do not spread projects across multiple areas

Unapproved storage locations may be cleared (notice is sent on slack + grace period to retrieve your materials will be offered)

Abandoned Projects
Projects left inactive for extended periods may be considered abandoned.

Procedure:

* A notice will be posted in the Vector Space Slack channel
* Members will be given an opportunity to retrieve materials
* Unclaimed items will be removed to maintain studio availability

Additional Member Storage
Members needing longer-term storage should use:

Vector Space Member Storage

The stained glass studio is intended for active work, not long-term project or material holding.

Shared Studio Principle
Storage space is communal.

Leave room for the next maker.

SINK USE & CLEANING PROTOCOL
Sink use varies depending on whether you are cleaning glass residue or chemicals/materials.

Kitchen & Bathroom Sinks
The kitchen and bathroom sinks may be used only for rinsing after grinding.

Approved uses:

* Rinsing hands after grinding
* Washing away fine glass slurry from tools
* Cleaning grinder parts after normal use

Requirements:

* Ensure no large glass fragments enter the sink
* Rinse surfaces thoroughly after use
* Leave sink clean for general community use

Downstairs Shop Sink
The downstairs shop sink must be used for:

* Cleaning materials contaminated with chemicals
* Flux cleanup
* Patina cleanup
* Cutting oil cleanup
* Chemical rinsing of tools or surfaces

This sink is designated for workshop waste and controlled cleanup.

Restrictions
* No glass shards or chunks in any sink
* Do not dump chemicals into kitchen or bathroom sinks
* Always remove solid debris before rinsing
* Clean the sink area after use

GENERAL STUDIO EXPECTATIONS
Members share responsibility for:

* Safety
* Cleanliness
* Respect for tools
* Responsible material use
* Maintaining a welcoming community environment

Which tools require training?
This question is not as straightforward as it sounds. Each member comes to the space with a varying level of experience, so while hand drills may not be on our list of tools that require training it is certainly feasible that some members will need training for safe and effective use of hand drills. With that said, the table below is our best effort at laying out which tools and equipment require safety training, and what constitutes as training. You should always seek help if you do not know how to use a tool. This is a learning space, and questions are always welcome.
Peer training is to be administered by a Shop Captain, Staff Person, or Instructor and should include every item on the Trainer Checklist for the tool/shop being trained on: https://vector-space.org/wiki/Tool_Trainer_Checklists

Vehicular Work Policy

Members may under certain conditions bring vehicles to be worked on at the makerspace. The following guidelines apply to any vehicular work requiring more than 24 hours:

* A vehicle will include any item that transports people or machinery and is too large to reasonably fit inside the makerspace. Examples include but are not limited to: cars, trucks, buses, boats, tractors, and trailers.
* Due to space constraints, tool requirements, limited infrastructure, and courtesy to other members, there may only ever be one vehicular project occurring at a time.
* A parking spot is to be determined with staff based on the scope of work and timeline of the project. Vehicles and tools may not block the loading dock at any time.
* This policy limits such work on a single vehicle to a maximum of three months per year.
* Members will pay $100/month while their vehicle is parked at the makerspace to be worked on. This fee must be paid up front.
* We understand that tools from the makerspace will be used to work on the vehicles, however tools must be returned to their designated area immediately after use and may never be left outside or in the vehicle overnight.
* Members should submit the scope of work, start date, and end date for the project before brining the vehicle to Vector Space. Staff approval is required.
* If the designated parking spot is being utilized and paid for within these guidelines, no other vehicles may be worked on at the makerspace until the previous project is complete.
* A breach of any of the above guidelines will result in one warning, followed by revocation of the right to park a vehicle upon second offense.
* Please print, complete, and turn this form into VS staff for vehicle work approval.

PROCEDURE
Heat transfer vinyl is stored near the vinyl cutter. You can tell the difference between HTV and regular adhesive backed vinyl because regular vinyl has a paper backing and HTV has a clear plastic backing.

When cutting heat transfer vinyl, be sure to cut the dull, colored side (NOT the shiny, clear carrier sheet).

Remember to mirror or horizontal flip your design before cutting, or it will be backwards on your final piece.

Stick your design onto your work piece (t-shirt, mug, etc.) and then put a teflon sheet between the design and the heat press to avoid burning your work piece. This heat press does not have attachments for non-flat objects (such as mugs, hats, etc.)

Settings
When using the heat press, you need to know the temperature and time for your particular application. These values can be found in the manual, online, and below are values based on our own experience:

Ceramic tile transfer: (Mugs &amp; Plates transfer is similar)<br />
Set temperature: 180°C<br />
Set time: 15 seconds

Cap transfer:<br />
Set temperature: 180°C<br />
Set time: 60 seconds

T-shirt transfer:<br />
Set temperature: 180°C<br />
Set time: (chemical fiber use for sublimation transfer paper: 30-50 seconds; pure cotton use for T-shirt transfer paper: 10-20 seconds)

To set the time and temperature, press the 'OK' button on the heat transfer machine to cycle through each setting and the up and down arrows to change them. When ready, close the handle (should fit tightly around work peice) and press 'ENTER' when the heat press has reached the target temperature to start the timer.

TROUBLESHOOTING
* Some heat press vinyl is &quot;cold peel&quot; and some is &quot;hot peel&quot;. If you design is peeling off with your carrier sheet, try waiting until the design has cooled before removing the carrier sheet.

END OF THE PROCEDURE

The 80 watt SFX MOPA fiber laser is used to engrave metals, some plastics, and can even generate color on stainless steel and titanium. The laser is controlled using the LightBurn software, just like the CO2 lasers, but there are more variables to control using the fiber laser. The five key variables are:

# Power
# Speed
# Interval (line spacing)
# Frequency
# Q-Pulse (pulse width)

Each of these variables plays an important role in creating the engraving you desire. Below are reasonable ranges of values you can expect to use for each of these variables; however, the specific values you need for your project are best found by using LightBurn's Material Test tool, which generates a table of engravings that modify two variables at a time. This tool can be found in Laser Tools -> Material Test Generator.
SAFETY
*The lasering process may generate smoke and gasses that can harm you and damage the machine. Research the material you're cutting and use the fume extractor to minimize these gasses.
*Lasers are a fire hazard. Keep extinguishers close and NEVER leave the machine unattended.
*Do not look directly at the laser beam. The fiber laser outputs in the 1024nm wavelength and requires appropriate eye protection.
*The high intensity laser beam can produce extremely high temperatures and significant amounts of heat.
*The fiber laser is not enclosed, can be very quiet, and is not visible. Please let others in the room know when you are firing the laser so that they can look away. Also keep hands outside the firing area while in operation.
PROCEDURE
# Set your material on the work surface. The M6 threaded holes on the work surface can be used to hold and/or align your material. The grid pattern should be perfectly aligned with the laser, so if it is not, please let staff know.
#Adjust the height of the laser head so that the correct focal distance is achieved. This is done by turning on the red laser indicator with the button under the monitor. You should see a red laser line and a laser dot. Use the handwheel on top of the laser to move the head until the line and dot overlap one another.
#LightBurn is the software for controlling the laser. Ensure at the bottom right of LightBurn that the JCZFiber device is selected. The remaining workflow follows that of the CO2 lasers.

Settings for Cutting
The laser cutter can cut thin sheet metal. To do so, power should be at 100% and speed at 100mm/s or slower. Increasing Q-Pulse to the maximum (500) and adjust frequency as needed for sharpness and clarity.
Most cutting operations will require multiple passes (usually 10 or more). Metal may warp during the cutting, so it is recommended to use hold downs around your piece. A scrap pieced under your material will save the laser bed from deep marks and engravings.
Rotary Engraving
The laser cutter can perform rotary operations using the U-axis. The general procedure is as follows:
#Navigate to Tools > Rotary Settings. Click the Enable Rotary button and set either the Object Diameter or Object Circumference to match your part's dimensions.
#Use ‘Start from current position’ in Lightburn
#Jog x and y on the control panel to move the laser to the required starting point on the work
#Press ‘Origin’ button on the control panel
#Send job (not start) from Lightburn to laser
#Load file from control panel by pressing File -> filename. Then run job by pressing start button on control panel.
# DO NOT FORGET to disable rotary when finished. Tools > Rotary Settings, deactivate Enable Rotary. Otherwise the machine will not work for the next person.
