GiffyCamp (New date!)

Registration is closed for this event
Photography, electronics, 3D printing, and the power to tell visual stories.

Overview

The camera doesn't make the photographer, the photographer makes the camera. At least that's our motto. So join us for this project in which 10 students will build their own animated gif cameras. That's right, it doesn't take just one image per click, but as many as you program! While you print, solder, and code your device, you'll also learn about compositon, storytelling, artistic themes and sequencing, the core of a photographer's toolkit.

Students will use their cameras on the final day to create their own art piece that will be publicly displayed during Vector Space's August First Friday (Aug 6th).

Curriculum

In the process of making animated gif cameras and using them to create an art piece, students will learn about,

  • 3D printing
  • Storytelling and composition
  • Electronics and soldering
  • Artistic themes and sequencing
  • Linux, remote terminals, and Python programming
  • Graphic design
  • Shooting, review, and curation of images

Schedule

This camp is from 9am - 3pm starting Monday July 26 and ending Friday July 30.

Friday will be spent walking the streets of downtown Lynchburg, using our cameras to capture the stories we hope to tell. Make sure to wear your walking shoes.

Eligibility

This project is for students ages 14 to 19. The early registration fee is $225 until June 17th, and $250 afterwards. Students need to commit to being present at every class, unless caused by illness or extenuating circumstances.

Scholarships are available by application on the Scholarships tab. The application period closes June 30th and the applicants will be notified by July 14th.

Additional Information

Face masks will be required for unvaccinated individuals during this program. Social distancing will be implemented as often as possible, but students will sometimes need to work closely in a shared space with shared tools. Tools will be cleaned prior to use by students, and the health of each student will be assessed regularly. With this small group (eight students) we will be able to quickly alert participants of any known COVID exposures and the program will be halted if such a situation arises. Parents and students will need to review and sign this COVID-19 Student Behavior Agreement prior to project participation.
