Public Art Camp

Registration is closed for this event
Design, implement, and catalog public art downtown.

Work with local artist Nugent Koscielny to create a public art mural. In addition to a collaborative mural, students will work with graphic designer Elise Spontarelli to create a website cataloging public art in Lynchburg.

Details

Camp will meet at Vector Space Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. Students should pack their own lunch and a snack, if needed. The days will begin with work on the website, which will include taking inventory of the public art in Lynchburg, creating a database that organizes this information, and then creating a website to share the location, artist, and other details about each piece of public art in the downtown area. Cataloging the public art will include walking field trips to local pieces of art to photograph for the website.

Each day a guest speaker will visit during lunch. Guest speakers will include artists, representatives from organizations that support and fund public art, and more.

After lunch students will focus on their mural, which will be either on a public wall or staircase in downtown Lynchburg. Lessons in art theory will include lines, shapes, color mixing, abstract vs realistic, texture, and more. Students will work with Nugent Koscielny from concept to execution of the mural, both at Vector Space and at the downtown mural location (TBD).

Logistics

Depending on weather, students should plan to spend half the day inside working on mural design and the website, and half of the day outside at the mural location. A few blocks of walking will be required each day; sunscreen will be provided but students should bring a water bottle.

Eligibility

This project is open to any high school aged student. Due to the intensive nature of the camp, students are expected to be present every day for the full camp period. The registration fee for this one-week camp is $110, thanks to financial support from the Valtim Family Foundation.
