3D print a bicycle powered phone charger!

During this one-week camp students will design, build, and document an open-hardware implementation of a bike powered phone charger.

Details

We'll start with a problem: phone batteries don't last long, and we don't want the phone to die while we're out on a bike ride, possibly lost. Then we propose a solution: biking requires energy, and we can harvest some of that energy, using it to charge the phone. But now the hard part, how do we implement the solution?

This one week camp will answer that question, as we guide students through the process of invention, starting from an idea. The first step will be to learn the science behind the tech: the basics of electricity and how to convert mechanical into electrical energy. With a working knowledge of voltages, currents, and battery capacities, we can come up with a parts list. Knowing the part dimensions will allow us to develop a mechanical housing using 3D CAD software. From 3D model will come 3D part, once students understand how to layout, slice, and properly prepare a 3D print. After numerous cycles of testing, rebuilding, and documenting, we'll share our work with the world, by uploading it to Instructables.

Schedule

This camp is from 9 am - 2 pm each day (7/8 - 7/12).

  • Day 1: Research existing methods of phone holding and charging. Complete a circuit boards lab to introduce concepts of electricity, focusing on generators.
  • Day 2: 3D design with Tinkercad and 3D printing using 3DprinterOS. A lesson in precise measurement using calipers. Design the dynamo housing and phone holder.
  • Day 3: Learn to solder using PCBs. Solder all wires and electronic components.
  • Day 4: Installation and testing on a bike.
  • Day 5: Modify design and documentation. Upload to Instructables, Thingiverse and write a blog post.

Eligibility

This project is open to students between 13 and 18 years old. Due to the intensive nature of the camp, students are expected to be present every day for the full camp period.

The registration fee for this one-week camp is $70, thanks to financial support from the Nuts and Bolts Foundation. For those in need of financial assistance, one scholarship for this program is available by application here.
